Using Business Rules and PowerGrid in CRM 2015

Using Business Rules (sometimes called Portable Business Logic or PBL) to create rules at the entity level allows PowerGrid users to apply basic logical functions while maintaining accessible customizations. Using Business Rules and PowerGrid in Dynamics CRM 2015 is easy if you follow this example. For this example, we will create a simple business rule to populate county based on the City field in the address.

1. To add a business rule, navigate to the form of the entity to which you would like to apply the rule.

 

2. Select Business Rules and click the New Business Rule button as you normally would to create a business rule.

 

3. Now we will change the scope of the business rule to apply to the entity instead of the form using the Scope button at the top right of the rule creation form.

 

4. Add the logic required for your rule, save your changes, activate the rule, and close the form. Save and publish the changes made to your record.

5. Navigate to the PowerGrid area of the CRM to test the rule. PowerGrid functions off stored views, so I have created a simple view to only display: Account Name, City, and County. Creating and saving a short series of records in the PowerGrid view doesn't immediately reflect the changes applied by the business rule. For the rule logic to be displayed, the view or browser must be refreshed.
