Dynamics CRM linked with Dynamics SL

Post Author: Joe D365 |

Quick post today to let you know what we have been working on internally at PowerObjects.  Being a Microsoft shop we finally moved over to Dynamics SL to take advantage of the project accounting features in this product.  In the past we have done work for clients linking CRM and SL together, but I finally got the folks to do a little work for me and hook them up and boy has it made my life easier!

As a company that focuses primarily on Microsoft Dynamics CRM I try to live in the product as much as possible - I found myself jumping back and forth between the two all the time and being the primary user in SL was always getting requests for info out of the system....and seeing as how we just installed in November I'm not a rock star in SL yet.

So these are the places that we have currently tied the two together:

  1. Customers- If flagged CRM accounts synch to SL with basic account information.  We also added some fields in CRM that transfer to other contacts for billing that get moved also.  It should be noted that if the data changes in SL that would then also update CRM.
  2. Invoices - Invoices generated in SL show up with basic information and the paid status as well as being able to look at the invoice line items.  Internally we are also working on an SSRS report that will generate a PDF of the invoice so we can send out of CRM.  This will be a god send for any of you out there that have had to work with EDD (electronic document delivery) in SL - Yuck
  3. Projects - We put our project requests into CRM and submit them to SL - this moves the basic info and presets a ton of defaults in SL that if missed make the accounting tough.
  4. Project Tasks- this is really cool in my opinion....we have always struggled with getting the tasks that consultants bill to to match what was on the statement of work.  So now when we get a signed statement of work the AE submits a project request with a list off of the tasks that were spec'd with the estimated hours - this all flows into SL and when consultants bill time to that project the only tasks they see are the ones on the SOW - how cool is that.
  5. Hours- This is great info for the project managers to see and manage - no longer do we need to run separate reports to see what has been billed against a project - we pull it all up in one form and can look at what is billed, entered but not billed, and what the original estimate was!

If I get some time later i will try to add a few screen shots - but I hope you get the idea - if anyone is really interested just go to our website and fill out our contact form and schedule a demo.

Have a great day!
Jim

  1. Have you done any SQL reports that gather data from SL and CRM for a combined report of both sources of data?

I am thinking of doing this as opposed to integration as it may be more cost effective initially as opposed to full integration.

  2. Hi Mike,

Yes - we have done many reports with sl and crm. They work really well to.

However, some of the benefits of integration are:

    1. Data integrity -- For example, an project is entered on the ms crm side, and is close to real time synchronized to SL. Changes and upkeeps are also done on the crm side. No data re-entry and no misspellings.

    2. User Environment -- A typical user that deals with setting up new customers, projects, rates, etc can live all inside ms crm. In fact, in many cases we have seen this can drastically decrease the number of SL licenses you may need.

    3. Advanced finds -- Advanced finds are great for mining data. Combine advanced finds with our dashboard component and now management can have very meaningful dashboards with data from crm/sl.

If you are interested - contact us and we can chat. We often start these integrations with just a couple sync points and expand only as needed.

Also -- check out our dashboard component. Free 30 day trials will be avail shortly.

    Thanks,

    Alex

  3. Hi,

    What technology have you used?

Have you developped your own Web Services? Buy Scribe?

I would like to build the bridge by myself using web service. That way we don't have to buy extra license for Scribe.

    Best Regards,

    Yan

We have used Scribe heavily in our integration - We would be interested in how you folks are using CRM - fits right in our vertical of Health and Life Sciences.

    Thx
    Jim
