CRM 2011 Patches via windows updates

Post Author: Joe D365 |

Another very nice feature of crm 2011 is that patches are delivered via windows updates. This means that administrators can leverage windows update services to granularly control when servers get updated, but the actual installation is fully automated. Alternatively the auto patch can also be set as in the case of our development servers – they patch automatically nightly. This also means that many more clients will be running crm 2011 servers fully patched with the latest and greatest patches as it will part of their weekly or monthly Microsoft patch routine.

Here's a screen shot of one of our servers this morning:

  1. Do you know of anyway that you can disable the CRM for Outlook client getting windows updates. We have a custom CRM system and until we test the latest roll-up, we prefer our customer stay on our recommended client roll-up. I know we can hide the update in Windows Update do you know the registry key that controls this or is there a way to control this from the CRM server?

    1. Hi - You can configure windows to ONLY download critical windows patches. But this would prevent additional patches for outlook and other software packages. If you need to control the outlook crm patches best option is to control all patches via any package to automatically install patches. One such option that is free is wsus - http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5216

      1. Thanks Joe, I am aware of product like SCCM and WSUS however the challenge we face is that our customers are external and don't belong to any domain, also we do not manage their computers. My initial idea was to create a install package for the CRM client version that we recommend for our custom CRM software, and as part of the package include a script to stop CRM from using windows updates. This is where I am stuck as its seems hard to find out how this is controlled in windows. I was thinking of perhaps a registry key or config file somewhere but my research so far has not been successful.
