Managing User Password Expiration in Office 365 and Dynamics CRM Online

Post Author: Joe D365 |

When activating an Office 365 or a Dynamics CRM online account, each user is provided with a temporary password and then prompted to create their own password which they use to login into their account in the Microsoft Portal. By default, Office 365 and Dynamics CRM Online user passwords are set to expire every 90 days and the user receives a notification to change their password 14 days in advance of the expiration. Administrators for the company account can manage how frequently user passwords expire. Below are instructions on how to extend the days before passwords expire and the numbers of days before users are notified of their password expiration.

  1. Navigate to the Microsoft Online Admin Center. Enter your username and password.
  2. From the Admin Center Dashboard screen click Service Settings, and then click Passwords.managing user password expiration in office 365 and dynamics crm
  3. Enter the number of days before passwords expire for the whole account. You can choose a number between 14 and 730 days. Then enter the number of days before users are notified that their password will expire for the whole account. You can choose a number from 1 to 30 days. Then click Save.

Note: When you change your password in Office 365, be sure to update the password on your phone and desktop email program to match the new password for your account.

Managing user password expiration in Office 365 and Dynamics CRM online is simple if you follow these steps. For more helpful tips check out our blog!

  1. I reset an individuals password in Office 365 however they are NOT being prompted to change it, even though the rules state that they will be prompted to change the temporary one -- and the email says they can follow the instructions to change it. It just gets them right into MS CRM 2013 Online and never allows them to change their password. Help.

    1. Hi TS - We have seen the change password flag take a good 24 hrs to take effect. SO we set a temp password, but O365 does not prompt for a few hours. If they first go to office 365 does it then prompt the users to change passwords ?

      1. Joe - I simply started the process all over again and this time it asked the user to change the password. Our users do not actually "know" they are using Office 365 - they simply go directly to the MS CRM online app. They also do not have rights to "change their own password" -- just not something we deployed. We are set for now, but I will have to watch this to see if it happens again in the future. Thanks for sharing and getting back to me - I went with the fastest resolution - start over...
